Wild Investments for Billionaires!
People who have more money than they can count need to spend it some how. With that said, there are a couple billionaires who are investing in some crazy ideas these days! Peter Thiel is the founder of Pay Pal and he was an early investor in Facebook. Needless to say he is worth a good amount of money. He’s actually worth around 1.5 billion. Just to give you a little background on this guy, last year he invested some of his money into an initiative that will encourage entrepreneurs to skip college. While that may have been something that worked out for him, I’m sure a lot of parents out there will not go for this idea.
Thiel must not be a big supporter of the government as a whole, because his newest investment idea is to create his own libertarian countries. First he wants to encourage entrepreneurs to skip college, and now he wants people to go to his countries and do pretty much whatever they want. The new countries will be built out in oceans on large scale platforms. They will be beyond the reach of ‘law of sea’ treaties. His vision is to have these ‘countries’ basically start from scratch free from laws and open to any beliefs. Some of the basic elements that these countries have will include no minimum wage and very few restrictions on weapons.
The billionaire believes that most people think his floating countries will not be possible. He is actually counting on that a little bit. Thiel believes that if they don’t take his idea seriously then they won’t bother trying to stop it from happening. Before they know it, it will be too late.
This is a pretty crazy idea if you ask me, but it’s also an interesting one. If you ask me, I don’t really have a problem with him doing this. I could definitely see people who would be interested in living this way. Who am I to stop them? I’m not here to tell people how to live their lives, and this is just another, different, way to live your life. You didn’t create your governments laws, you were born into them. These people will get the choice to leave those laws and maybe go start their own. If that’s what they want, then more power to them!
On a side note: Another tech billionaire has a ridiculous investment plan of his own. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced that he will be funding the ‘Clock of the Long Now’. This is a proposed mechanical clock that is supposed to keep time for 10,000 years! There are a couple prototypes of the clock on display at museums. Jeff has donated $42 million to begin construction on the full scale clock that will be located on his land in Texas.
