“The U” – Remembering the 2001 Miami Hurricanes Football Team
With all of the bad press the University of Miami (my personal favorite college football team) is seeing these days, I thought I might recollect one of the better times in their history. I want everyone to remember, and maybe learn about for the first time, the 2001 Miami Hurricanes football season. They went 12-0 in 2001 and won the National Championship over Nebraska (with Heisman winner Eric Crouch at QB) in the Rose Bowl.
The U has won 5 National Championships in their history, but the one in 2001 was perhaps the most impressive and almost assuredly had the most talent. I personally believe that this team had the most talent of ANY college football team in the history of college football. They were undefeated and just demolished most of the teams they played. A few of their wins were by scores of 33-7, 61-0, 38-7, 45-3, 38-0, 59-0, 65-7 and they won the Championship game 37-14. Miami scored a total of 512 (42.6 points per game) points while allowing only 117 (9.75 points allowed per game), beating opponents by an average of 32.9 points per game that season.
The individual players on this team were simply amazing as well. Six players earned All-American status and six players were finalists for national awards, including QB Ken Dorsey who was 3rd in Heisman voting that year. All together, a ridiculous 17 players from the 2001 Miami team were drafted in the FIRST ROUND of the next 4 NFL Draft classes! Here is a look at many of those terrific players… as well as a few of the other great players to pass through the University of Miami over their storied history…
